The Ya Kun kaya toast set was about S$4.80 in 2020 and is around S$6.30–6.50 today — roughly a one‑third jump in price. Over a similar period, the STI has been more or less range‑bound. The inflation problem is not abstract — it is sitting on your breakfast tray.
But here is the uncomfortable truth: relying on capital gains from a stretched equities market to fund your retirement is a gamble you simply cannot afford. We need to look for a sanctuary asset. We need genuine capital protection during market volatility and rate shocks. We must cut through the noise using pure kopitiam logic. If a business cannot generate real cash to pay the rent, it is just a matter of time before the lights go out.
