Putting money into SRS can lower this year’s taxable income, but the account has its own rules on the way out. Iggy and Angela walk through three questions: how much the relief is worth to you, what happens when you withdraw, and what the money does while it sits inside the account.

A bank banner can make an SRS top-up look like free money. It is not. The relief is a deferral, and its value depends on your chargeable income, while the withdrawal age, penalty and ten-year window shape what you eventually keep. I walk through three questions before you commit cash: what the relief is worth to you, what happens when the money comes out, and what it earns while it sits inside the account.
Key takeaways:

  • Singapore Citizens and PRs can contribute up to $15,300 a year in cash.

  • The first $20,000 of chargeable income is taxed at nil under current rates.

  • Early withdrawal makes the whole amount taxable and adds a 5% penalty.

  • After the penalty-free age, only half of each withdrawal is added to taxable income.

  • DBS and OCBC SRS cash rates were stated as 0.05% a year as of 9 October.
